What is Sound Healing?

You have experienced sound healing before. When listening to the birds or the sound of the ocean, as your heart rate slows and you feel relaxed; this is sound healing. Intuitively mothers sometimes sing or hum to their babies to calm their crying or send them to sleep, this too is sound healing.  We live in an exciting time where we are once again remembering the divine nature of sound, and tuning in to the power of sound to heal us.

In the medical field, evidence is continually showing how music and sound can help those suffering from Dementia, Cancer, and many other conditions. For example, in the air sound travels at 340 metres per second, whereas in water it travels at 1500 metres. The human heart and brain are over 70% water and the lungs are over 80% water, so our vital organs are great conductors of sound! This knowledge is already being recognised and utilised in the modern medical field, with kidney and gallstones being broken up using sound waves, and HIFU (High intensity focused ultrasound) being used in some clinics to treat prostate cancer. Hospitals and schools allover the world are using music therapy and live instruments to improve health and wellbeing. Without the need for scientific proof, we know how deeply music can affect us, triggering memories and emotions, bringing us feelings of ecstasy, consoling us, bringing tears to our eyes. The combination of both the physical and emotional effects of vibration and frequency make sound healing a unique tool for holistic health.

“If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” - Nikola Tesla

What happens in a Sound Healing session?

In a sound healing session with Ruhiya, you lie or sit comfortably (with optional aromatherapy oils, burning sage or incense). Then you are guided with breath and guided visualisation and relaxation techniques. Gently, sound healing instruments, such as tuning forks, light percussion, bells, chimes and bowls, and vocal toning, are used to emit healing harmonic frequencies and vibrations. Ruhiya's training, experience and intuition, facilitate the natural healing which takes place when your cells and the healing sound frequencies are in the same vicinity. There is nothing for you to do at all except relax and receive. Sometimes sound healing sessions are called 'sound baths', because you bathe in the harmonious vibrations. You could also think of this as a massage with sound, one that relaxes the body, calms the mind, speaks to the soul and opens the heart.

What are the benefits of Sound Healing?

As the cells in your body entrain to the harmonious sounds, like a flower opening up to the sun, your body opens up to the healing vibrations. Very often, sound healing will result in you becoming so relaxed that your brain goes into alpha, theta or delta waves. In this deeply relaxed state, the body is able to heal itself. States of mind that would usually take months or years to practice to achieve during meditation, are achievable in minutes through the therapeutic use of sound.
